Diagnosis and Treatment for Hormonal Conditions in Pets
Pets, like people, can experience health issues due to hormone imbalances. At All Pets Animal Hospital & 24-Hour Emergency Care, we provide comprehensive diagnostic testing through our in-house lab, as well as collaborate with external laboratories for more complex evaluations.
Here are some common hormonal conditions we diagnose and treat:
Cushing’s Disease
Also known as hyperadrenocorticism, Cushing’s disease results from excessive hormone production by the adrenal glands, located on top of the kidneys. This condition primarily affects dogs over 6 years old and may present with symptoms such as:
- Hair loss
- Increased appetite
- Excessive drinking and urination
- Pot-bellied appearance
- Excessive panting
Hypothyroidism in Dogs
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland fails to produce enough hormone, affecting metabolism. This condition is most common in middle-aged dogs. Symptoms include:
- Hair loss
- Dry coat
- Dry skin
- Thick, puffy skin
- Weight gain
- Lethargy
- Loss of heat cycles
Hyperthyroidism in Cats
This condition is caused by an overactive thyroid gland and is typically seen in older cats. It results in an increased metabolism and symptoms such as:
- Weight loss
- Increased appetite
- Excessive thirst and urination
- Vomiting
- Rapid heart rate
- Behavioral changes, including increased vocalization
Most endocrine disorders can be managed at All Pets Animal Hospital & 24-Hour Emergency Care. For more complex cases, such as radioactive iodine therapy for hyperthyroid cats, we will refer to specialized facilities.
